Diversity Week: Changing Narratives. March 6-10

The theme of this year’s Diversity Week is Changing Narratives. Join us for an engaging series of events featuring speakers from across the country who will highlight diverse perspectives in dentistry and how they influence our work in oral health, medicine, and academia. A series of Lunch and Learn presentations offered throughout the week are designed to help us better understand how we can learn from one another with humility and respect for cultural differences and similarities.

Monday, March 6, 12 noon– Connecting with the Indigenous Community on Oral Health

A thoughtful discussion around the contributions of the Indigenous Community in oral medicine will kick off this year’s Diversity Week Lunch and Learn series. Join us for an engaging conversation with guest speakers: Dr. Brian Swann, Linda Coombs, and Bettina Washington. Hear from esteemed elders of the Wampanoag community on matters relating to history, culture, and contributions to the practice oral medicine. Learn more

Monday, March 6, 6pm– Opening Reception

Join us for a festive opening reception featuring cultural dance performances, refreshments, and a keynote by Dr. Rueben C. Warren,  professor and director of the Tuskegee National Center for Bioethics. Registration is required to attend. Learn more

Tuesday, March 7, 12 noon–LGBTQIA+ Considerations in Patient Care

HSDM will welcome Quincey J. Roberts, Sr., a leader on LGBTQIA+ advocacy from the Boston Mayor’s Office, for a conversation on LGBTQIA+ considerations in patient care. We'll learn how we can further support and foster an inclusive culture for all who walk through HSDM's doors and clinics. Wednesday, March 8, 12 noon– Mental Health and Wellness in Dentistry

Dr. Huong Le will discuss health equity, dental care, and behavioral health. As a community, HSDM will have the opportunity to engage in thoughtful discussions around these important topics with an international expert on mental health and wellness in dentistry. Learn more

Thursday, March 9, 12 noon–Considerations for Patients Observing Ramadan

Harvard University’s Muslim Chaplain, Khalil Abdur-Rashid will lead a discussion on considerations for patients observing Ramadan. This year, Ramadan begins in mid-March and will be observed by a number of individuals in the community. The HSDM community can learn about helpful ways we can support members of the community for whom this holiday is observed by fasting. Learn more 

Friday, March 10, 12 noon–Gaining Perspective on the Deaf Population and Dentistry

Dr. Joseph Samona will close the week’s Lunch and Learn series with a presentation on the deaf population and dentistry. Dr. Samona will share personal experiences and perspectives that will guide an important discussion around ways in which we can develop cultural dexterity in the practice of caring for individuals who are deaf and/or hard-of-hearing.
