Dr. Malcolm Whitman and Dr. Yingzi Yang, both professors of Developmental Biology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM), have been tapped to lead HSDM’s Office of Research. Beginning October 1, 2018, Dr. Whitman will become associate dean for basic science, and Dr. Yang will become associate dean for translational research. In these new roles, they will share the responsibility of leading HSDM’s research efforts – promoting, overseeing, and reviewing all research activities at HSDM.
Drs. Whitman and Yang will be responsible for the planning and oversight of all training-related research activities at HSDM, including research by DMD, MMSc, DMSc and PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. They will also lead the Faculty Research Committee’s charge to help stimulate, plan, and oversee all research by HSDM faculty and inter-institutional collaborations.
“Both accomplished researchers, Drs. Whitman and Yang have run successful labs, published numerous papers, and enhanced HSDM’s research reputation on the Longwood campus and well beyond,” said Dean Bruce Donoff in an announcement to the HSDM community. “Please join me in congratulating them as they take on these new roles at HSDM.”
HSDM’s Office of Research conducts basic scientific research focused on the areas of skeletal biology and the pathology of bones, joints, vascular and connective tissues. HSDM’s long-term goal is to be at the forefront of research into the cause and cure for diseases of bone and craniofacial soft tissues. Such research enables dental medicine to impact new avenues of research and investigation into major skeletal disorders such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, autoimmune diseases, tumor biology, and wound healing.
