HSDM’s iconic main building, the stately two-story brick building that sits on Longwood Avenue, was formally dedicated in 1909. Countless students and visitors have passed through the front doors for more than 110 years.The first-floor lobby, last updated over 30 years ago in the 1990s, underwent tremendous wear and tear as the community’s main entry point to the building. Now, with funding support from Harvard University earmarked for building renewal projects, the lobby has been remodeled into a welcoming entry point and gathering space.
The architectural firm, Architectural Resources Cambridge (ARC), proposed a transformative update to the lobby that honors the building’s historic architecture while providing a more modern aesthetic and amenities. The renovation included upgrading wall and floor finishes, new furniture, area rugs, and enhanced lighting to create a warm and welcoming environment for the HSDM community and visitors. The firm removed a security desk that was no longer in use, opening up a seating area for visitors.
Additionally, the first floor of HSDM’s Research and Education Building (REB) received significant upgrades. A community gathering space with a kitchenette and new furnishings now enhances the communal atmosphere of the first-floor open area. Both lobbies were completed just in time for Commencement in May.
Signage on the exterior of the School has also been updated. In 2016, the Harvard Longwood Campus engaged an experiential design firm to facilitate the design and coordination of uniform wayfinding signage across the Longwood campus. The multi-year process included getting approval from the University and the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) for the comprehensive design plan. In 2023, new directional signage was added along with more visible street numbering at the entrance of 188 Longwood Avenue.
Another exciting addition was a stone carver expertly carved the school’s name on the front marble parapet at 188 Longwood Avenue. The style matches engravings on Harvard Medical School buildings and gives HSDM an even more distinctive presence on Longwood Avenue.
