Dr. Vincenzo G. Teran joined Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) earlier this year as director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and instructor of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology. He also serves as an instructor for the Department of Psychology at Harvard Medical School and a staff psychologist at the Cambridge Health Alliance. Jeffrey Taylor’s passion for art and science led him to the field of dentistry where he hopes to combine these interests to make a difference.

After he graduates from Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) in May with his D.M.D., Taylor will pursue a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery where he’ll one day reconstruct damaged jaws, fix life-altering facial deformities, and give hope to those who need a reason to smile again.... HSDM's Diversity and Inclusion Efforts Recognized with National Award

For the second year in a row, Harvard School of Dental Medicine has been honored with an Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. The Award honors colleges and universities nationwide that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

"We've created exciting pipeline programs on campus and have reached hundreds of students, but to truly expose talented students to HSDM, we also need to take HSDM to where they reside and study,” said Josephine Kim, former Director of Diversity and Inclusion.... Building Bridges

The path to a career in dentistry isn’t always clear when you don’t know the first steps to take. It can be particularly challenging for first generation college students or students from underrepresented minority backgrounds who may not have a mentor in the profession. A new “Bridge to Dental School” pipeline program designed by Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) students through the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) aims to change that.

2019 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi: Caring for Patients with Intellectual Disabilities and Global Health

Over spring break, six HSDM students traveled to Abu Dhabi, which was the site of the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games and features a program called Special Smiles and provides dental screenings and care to athletes. HSDM students will share their experiences participating in the Special Smiles program and how inclusive programs like this are essential to providing positive dental experiences to all patients.

Portrait of Dr. Freeman Honors HSDM’s First African American Graduate

Walk through the halls of Harvard and you’ll notice the University’s 382-year history displayed prominently. At Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) portraits of deans and faculty dating back to the School’s founding in 1867 adorn the lobby of the main building. These paintings serve as reminders of notable milestones and striking figures, but until recently provided a glimpse at only a select few. A new initiative, the Inclusive Spaces Project at HSDM, is an effort to broaden the of scope this artwork and reflect the School’s diverse and proud past.

Dolores Mercedes Franklin, DMD74, PD76, was admitted to HSDM as the first African American woman and among the first women at the height of the Civil Mercedes FranklinRights Movement and the Women’s Liberation Movement, both of which were harbingers of the changes to come. She will speak about her life, career and times. The Freeman, Grant and Franklin Scholarship, named for the first Black graduates from the school, male and female, will be launched to encourage minority students to continue in their footsteps....
