Jeffrey Taylor’s passion for art and science led him to the field of dentistry where he hopes to combine these interests to make a difference.

After he graduates from Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) in May with his D.M.D., Taylor will pursue a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery where he’ll one day reconstruct damaged jaws, fix life-altering facial deformities, and give hope to those who need a reason to smile again.... For the second year in a row, Harvard School of Dental Medicine has been honored with an Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. The Award honors colleges and universities nationwide that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

"We've created exciting pipeline programs on campus and have reached hundreds of students, but to truly expose talented students to HSDM, we also need to take HSDM to where they reside and study,” said Josephine Kim, former Director of Diversity and Inclusion.... The path to a career in dentistry isn’t always clear when you don’t know the first steps to take. It can be particularly challenging for first generation college students or students from underrepresented minority backgrounds who may not have a mentor in the profession. A new “Bridge to Dental School” pipeline program designed by Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) students through the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) aims to change that.

Portrait of Dr. Freeman Honors HSDM’s First African American Graduate

Walk through the halls of Harvard and you’ll notice the University’s 382-year history displayed prominently. At Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) portraits of deans and faculty dating back to the School’s founding in 1867 adorn the lobby of the main building. These paintings serve as reminders of notable milestones and striking figures, but until recently provided a glimpse at only a select few. A new initiative, the Inclusive Spaces Project at HSDM, is an effort to broaden the of scope this artwork and reflect the School’s diverse and proud past.

Pathways into Dentistry Pipeline Program Recognized with National STEM Award

Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) was recently honored for its diversity and inclusion efforts, receiving a 2018 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. The Award honors colleges and universities nationwide that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Gift Kicks Off the Freeman, Grant, Franklin Scholarship

Colgate-Palmolive Company has made a generous $50,000 gift toward the establishment of the Freeman, Grant, Franklin Scholarship. The scholarship will pay tribute to prominent African American figures in the School’s history — Robert Tanner Freeman, DMD1869, George Franklin Grant, DMD1870, and Dolores Mercedes Franklin, DMD74. The funding will support a DMD student from an underrepresented minority group or with significant financial need.
