Diversity Week Lunch and Learn: Accessible Oral Health for Neurodivergent Patients

According to the Equality Act 2010, no individual should face discrimination in service provision, employment, or education. A paper in Nature (July 21, 2023) highlighted that neurominorities, whether they identify as disabled or not, are protected under this law. However, despite this stipulation, many still encounter substantial health inequalities. Dr. Maritza Morell will share her perspectives on ways to develop cultural dexterity in caring for neurodivergent individuals.

The Presenter

DrMorellDr. Maritza Morell, a board-certified pediatric dentist and diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and serves on the Executive Board of the Massachusetts and National Hispanic Dental Associations. She completed her dental training at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and the University of Puerto Rico Dental School. She also holds public health degrees from both the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the University of Puerto Rico.

Morell is not only dedicated to her pediatric dentistry practice but also teaching, researching, and advocating for improved dental access for children. Her academic roles have included Director of Pre-Doctoral Pediatric Dentistry at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, faculty member in Pediatric Dentistry at Harvard's Department of Developmental Biology, and junior associate at Boston Children's Hospital, earning her multiple awards for her leadership and contributions.

Her expertise in sedation, general anesthesia, and hospital dentistry uniquely positions her to care for children with a wide range of needs, from those experiencing dental anxiety to those with disabilities or special care requirements.
