Returning to Rwanda: New Program Focuses on Training Future Physicians

Building on strong partnerships in Rwanda that led to the launch of a new dental school in the country in 2018, Harvard School of Dental Medicine faculty returned to Rwanda this summer to expand oral health training, this time with a focus on future physicians.

Dr. Yang Chai, a leader in the field of craniofacial development, has been named this year’s Goldhaber Award recipient. The Goldhaber Award recognizes an individual who is held at the highest international esteem in their field related to oral and systemic health. The award was established in 1989 in honor of former Harvard School of Medicine (HSDM) dean Dr. Paul Goldhaber, a periodontist and researcher, upon the completion of his 22 years of service to the School. Michelle Chou, DMSc16, MPH08, and her a two-year-old miniature goldendoodle Bao are on a mission to spread joy in some of the most stressful settings. From dental office to college campus, the four-legged, curly blonde pup has wagged his way into the hearts of those who need comfort.

“He has a natural talent for bringing joy and happiness wherever he goes,” said Chou, who is an alumnus of both Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, as well as a part-time lecturer at HSDM.

Meet the Class of 2027

The Class of 2027 arrived on campus in early August bringing diverse experiences and an incredible amount of energy to the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) community. The entering class is made up of 35 dental students and 164 medical students. During their first year, HMS and HSDM students learn alongside each other before entering each school’s focused curriculum.

A Legacy in Periodontology Amplified by Generosity

The career of the late Michael Lawrence Barnett, PD73, reflected a life full of service to others. It took him from the ranks of the U.S. Army and service in Vietnam, to the halls of academia, and then into the corporate world of consumer healthcare. His impact as an educator and leader in the field of periodontology is well known at dental schools across the country. The Michael L. Barnett Fellowship in Graduate Periodontology was first established in 2019 with an initial bequest of $500,000, and recently augmented through a gift from his estate. Now his legacy will continue to influence the next generation of periodontists through a second generous gift of $1.1 million from his trust to support Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s (HSDM) Department of Periodontology.... The Impact of Dental Insurance Reform

June 8, 2023

In November 2022, Massachusetts voters approved a ballot initiative that will require dental insurers to spend at least 83% of customer premiums on patient care and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of care. The new law will require insurance companies that don’t reach that minimum percentage, known as a medical loss ratio, to issue rebates to their customers, beginning in 2024. Health insurance companies across the country are already subject to similar rules for medical care, but the law is the first of its kind to apply to dental insurers....
