Dr. Steven Scrivani

Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Dr. Steven J. Scrivani is the Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Pain and Director of the Orofacial Pain Residency Program in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a Research Associate at the Pain and Analgesia Imaging and Neuroscience (P.A.I.N.) Group at McLean Hospital and the Center for Pain and the Brain at ChildrenÍs Hospital. Dr. Scrivani is also Adjunct Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral Medicine and Craniofacial Pain at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Scrivani has numerous publications, book chapters, and monographs on orofacial pain and related pain medicine disorders and is the editor of a textbook on Head, Face and Neck Pain Disorders. He is a member of numerous local and national pain societies and serves on and Chair's multiple committees and Special Interest Sections on orofacial pain and headache. Dr. Scrivani has lectured nationally and internationally at orofacial pain, headache and pain medicine and neuroscience meetings and conferences. He has been strategically involved and been the Program director for numerous continuing medical and dental medicine education courses and symposium. Dr. Scrivani's clinical specialties include headache disorders, trigeminal neuralgia, neuropathic facial pain, maxillofacial movement disorders, burning mouth/tongue disorder, cancer-related pain disorders, trigeminal nerve injuries, salivary gland disorders, and temporomandibular disorders.

Fields of Interest

Dr. Scrivani's research interests include functional brain imaging of pain, complementary and alternative medicine treatments for pain, clinical drug trials for pain, salivary biomarkers of chronic pain disorders, neuropathic pain scales and neurophysiological testing for chronic pain.
