Dr. Salim Afshar
Dr. Afshar practices the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with a specific focus on head and neck pathology. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is an attending surgeon in the Department of Plastic and Oral Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital where he trains and teaches surgical residents and students. Dr. Afshar is also part of the Head and Neck Surgical Team and the Vascular Anomalies Team. In addition to surgically managing cysts and tumors of the maxillofacial region, he performs corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery, dentoalveolar surgery including dental implants and extraction of wisdom teeth.
Fields of Interest
Dr. Afshar’s research interests are in three main areas: innovation, global healthcare delivery, and head and neck cysts, tumors and vascular lesions. He is a faculty member in the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change (PGSSC) at Harvard Medical School and currently has multiple projects in both India and Zambia. In addition, Dr. Afshar is part of the Innovation & Digital Health Accelerator Program at Boston Children’s Hospital where he has co-developed an innovation fellowship. The fellowship focuses on both digital health and medical devices, and exposes surgical residents to all aspects of innovation. Dr. Afshar is also the founder and inventor of several products and companies, and is an active mentor at the Harvard Innovation Lab.
Raised in Boston, Dr. Afshar completed his undergraduate work at Boston University before receiving his DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He then received his MD degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his surgical residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
