Two members of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) community have been honored for their exceptional service to the School and the surrounding medical community. Dr. Vicki Rosen, professor and chair of the Department of Developmental Biology, was selected as a recipient of the 2023 Barbara J. McNeil Faculty Award for Exceptional Service. Carrie Sylven, director of Student Affairs, was chosen as a recipient of the 2023 Daniel D. Federman Staff Award for Exceptional Service.

The awards were established to recognized Harvard Medical School (HMS) and HSDM faculty and staff respectively, who have made substantial contributions in advancing the missions of the Schools. Both awards are presented annually by the HMS Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Partnership.

Vicki RosenRosen arrived at HSDM in 2001. She is chair of the department of Developmental Biology and leads a lab focused on studying the physiological roles that bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) play in the development, maintenance, and repair of musculoskeletal tissues. In 2020, she served as HSDM’s interim dean and co-chair of the search committee for a new dean. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic she led HSDM through challenging times.

“Vicki is an avid scientist and a true leader whose leadership has inspired others,” wrote her nominators. “Her approach makes everybody feel connected and content while working toward the end goals. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition for serving tirelessly and continuing to support HSDM/HMS.”

Carrie SylvenSylven has served at HSDM since 2015. She is a vital resource for both DMD and AGE students, and in addition to assisting the student body, Sylven works diligently with faculty, curriculum administrators, program directors, and the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. She also serves as Title IX Coordinator for the School.

“Above all, Carrie is dedicated to creating an environment where students, faculty, and staff alike can thrive. She inspires and models dedication, hard work, and effectiveness that influences leadership, impacting the school’s causes and vision,” her nominators wrote. “Just as a healthcare provider would be devoted to providing the highest standards of care to their patients, Carrie is committed to doing the same for her students and colleagues.”

Rosen and Sylven will be recognized for their noteworthy service during upcoming awards ceremonies.
