Abstract: Case-based learning (CBL) pedagogy has proven to be an effective teaching method in healthcare education. It has the common aim to bridge theory-practice gap in healthcare education. It promotes students’ problem-solving ability, critical thinking skill and lifelong learning. Utilizing CBL in operative dentistry during the transition into clinical training helps preparing dental student for their clinical practice at the early time. This talk will introduce the process of designing the CBL activities and describe its efficacy in bridging theory-practice gap in operative curriculum. Additionally, this talk will describe the hand on simulated caries tooth preparation and restoration activities which followed the CBL activities.

Learning Objectives: 

1. Identify the theory-practice gap in traditional operative curriculum.
2. Introduce the case-based learning pedagogy used in bridging theory-practice gap in operative curriculum and how it affected student’s comfort level during the transition into their operative clinical practice.
3. Describe the CBL class activities and simulated caries tooth preparation and restoration activities that promoted student-centered learning in operative curriculum.
4. Apply the information received from this webinar and bring back to their own institution.
