Diverse Perspectives in Dentistry: Dr. Hend Alqaderi

We will host our second Diverse Perspectives in Dentistry lecture series. This April we are honoring and bringing awareness around Dentists of Arab Descent and their contributions to the field of Oral Medicine. The series aims to build and strengthen our community by offering opportunities to learn more about:

1) The remarkable individuals that make up the Oral Health profession

2) The important work being done in oral medicine and intersecting health fields. We are excited to share that Dr. Hend Alqaderi will be our keynote speaker for this months event.

Dr. Hend Alqaderi is a part-time instructor at the Department of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. 

Dr. Alqaderi has a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree in Oral Biology from Harvard School of Dental Medicine and a Certificate in Health Economics from the University of Washington. Further, she’s a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health.

Dr. Alqaderi has long been fascinated by the possibility of using saliva to understand and predict diseases. She has researched salivary biomarkers microbiome to identify inflammatory diseases like diabetes and COVID-19. She was part of one of the largest longitudinal studies in Middle East, she and her team collected data from over 8,000 Kuwaiti children to study risk factors of obesity and diabetes. In her study, she identified promising salivary biomarkers that predicted diabetes and obesity outcomes. 

For her contributions, she has been awarded the 2021 L’Oréal UNESCO Award for Talented Women in Science and the Lois Cohen Prize from Harvard University for excellence in Global Health Research.

Additionally, Dr.Alqaderi was a TED TALK speaker for the first ever Arabic TED in Doha Qatar, March 2023.
