Abstract: Dental patients may present with complex medical history of past and current illnesses which may impact delivery of dental care. This course will describe the importance of taking a thorough medical history and how it may impact dental therapy, alter treatment plans and perhaps even avoid medical emergencies.

It will allow the dental healthcare provider to understand past and current disease states, current medications the patient may be taking and their effect on treatment strategies for their patients.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the importance of taking a detailed and thorough medical history
  2. Describe the essential components of a medical history
  3. Explore strategies for successful patient interviews
  4. Discuss detailed review of systemic diseases
  5. Discuss and elaborate connections between systemic disease and oral health
  6. Review common medications and treatments the dental patient may present with
