Abstract: The ever-increasing death rate associated with the opioid epidemic has brought emergency opioid overdose reversal into the spotlight. With the increased potency and duration of new illicitly-manufactured fentanyl analogs, new strategies for effective opioid reversal are emerging, including the introduction of new opioid antagonists. Additionally, there are parallel concerns for adverse reactions to opioid overdose reversal, including the opioid withdrawal syndrome. This course summarizes current scientific evidence and opinion on the issues surrounding emergency opioid reversal.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Review the pharmacologic characteristics of opioid antagonists
  2. Describe the signs and symptoms of opioid antagonists
  3. Review the currently recommended methods of administration and dosages of antagonists used to reverse opioid overdose
  4. Describe the potential adverse effects of opioid reversal and their management
