Dr. Shibani Sahni BDS, MMSc, is a talented and accomplished dentist with over 16 years’ experience in private clinical practice. She has had extensive experience in various areas of dentistry, including dental process improvements, dental procedures’ advancement and quality assurance programs. As owner of her own practice, she has also had experience with business operations and strategies. With a background including 16 years as a practicing dentist and owner of her dental practice, she is an invaluable resource to our students in the areas of clinical expertise, practice management, and patient treatment planning. Dr Sahni has also done her Masters in Dental Education from HSDM and is a dedicated and passionate teacher. She is involved in both the MMSc program as a mentor and faculty, and in the predoctoral DMD program as a clinical educator and course director of Diagnosis and Treatment Planning course. She is also the faculty lead for the Scholar’s in Dental education program for the DMD students who are interested in perusing their carrier in Dental Education and academic dentistry.

Dr. Sahni is a firm believer in, and past practitioner of, interprofessional health care and has a deep interest in interprofessional education. This prepares medical and dental professionals across many different fields to share information and participate together in the treatment of patients with multiple or complex medical conditions. She is working with Harvard Medical School to develop an interprofessional education program for Harvard dental and medical students. At HSDM she has been deeply involved in expanding the current interprofessional education program, as liaison with the HMS IPE program. She would like to expand the program even further, eventually internationally. She is currently working on a collaboration with Sydney University and other International Dental schools to develop a cultural and interprofessional exchange program.

Dr. Sahni is also working to progress of the dental field forward through research, and is currently working on developing ways to teach tele dentistry to predoctoral students. Tele dentistry has become a vital method of patient treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has the potential to expand access to dentists for patients across the country who are unable to be seen in person for any number of reasons.

In the MMSc in Dental Education program, Dr. Sahni is working with our Harvard students and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine on an outreach program, to bring together postdoctoral dental students who are interested in academia as a career path. We hope that increasing the visibility of academic program through this and similar outreach programs, and eventual joint publications, will increase the number of dental faculty members in the United States and possibly across the globe.
