Dr. Shigemi Nagai, associate professor of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) recently received the E. B. Clark Award from the Society for Color and Appearance in Dentistry (SCAD)–the society’s highest recognition for lifetime achievement in color science research.

Drs. Whitman and Yang Will Lead HSDM’s Office of Research

Dr. Malcolm Whitman and Dr. Yingzi Yang, both professors of Developmental Biology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM), have been tapped to lead HSDM’s Office of Research. Beginning October 1, 2018, Dr. Whitman will become associate dean for basic science, and Dr. Yang will become associate dean for translational research. In these new roles, they will share the responsibility of leading HSDM’s research efforts – promoting, overseeing, and reviewing all research activities at HSDM.

Dr. Yingzi Yang, professor of developmental biology at HSDM, leads a laboratory of seven postdoctoral researchers and three visiting scholars researching skeletal development—particularly how the skeletal system forms and how skeletal diseases arise.

Ana Fernanda Calles, a fourth-year DMD student, was recently awarded the HSDM Global Health Research Travel Award to pursue research in oral health literacy in diabetics with periodontal disease in Mexico City, Mexico.

HSDM and the Wampanoag Tribe: The Importance of Cultural Competency

Since 2013, Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and Northeastern University’s Bouvé College of Health Sciences have partnered with the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) on Martha’s Vineyard Island to combat oral health disparities within the Native American population. During their three years of collaboration, HSDM students involved in the program have learned that cultural competency is key in effectively treating patients with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
