Abstract: The dental professional works with various restorative materials. Material selection is critical to establish esthetic outcome and to obtain patient’s satisfaction. Composites and ceramics are the major material for esthetic dentistry, and it is important to understand the optical properties of each material, such as color and translucency. Optical properties of “color” and “translucency” are closely related each other and also associates with underlying materials.

In this lecture, clinical tips on material selection on composite and ceramic in daily practice will be provided based on scientific investigations. Also, an easy method to determine gingival phenotype regarding translucency will be introduced.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn about the shade selection of composite; blending effect matters.

2. Learn about the translucency of zirconia; zirconia is not opaque.

3. Learn about translucency of marginal gingiva.
