Dr. Donald B. Giddon

Professor of Developmental Biology, Emeritus

Dr. Donald B. Giddon is professor emeritus at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He is also a clinical professor emeritus of community health at Brown University School of Medicine and an attending physician at New York University Hospital. Dr. Giddon served as dean of the New York University College of Dentistry from 1975 to 1980, and professor of anesthesiology at the NYU School of Medicine and of psychology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Giddon is a 1959 DMD graduate from Harvard University. He received a PhD in psychology from Brandeis University, following an AB from Brown University and an MA in psychology from Boston University. He is the author of more than 150 published articles, abstracts, reviews, and books on self-image, the psychophysiology of stress and disease, pain and facial deformity, and the physical bases of the perception of normal and dysmorphic facial and body appearance.

Dr. Giddon is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Public Health Association, American Psychological Association, International College of Psychosomatic Medicine, and Royal Society of Medicine and a charter member of the American Pain Society.

The Professor Donald B. Giddon Conference Room at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) maintains a dedicated collection of Dr. Giddon’s published books and journal writings on behavioral sciences and health care, while facilitating research, training and practice of dentists as oral physicians. This collection is open to the Harvard student and faculty research community by appointment by contacting the Dean’s Office at (dean@hsdm.harvard.edu).

Dr. Giddon is professor emeritus at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He is also a clinical professor emeritus of behavior, behavioral and social sciences  at Brown University School of Public Health. Dr. Giddon also served as dean of the New York University College of Dentistry, and professor of anesthesiology at the NYU School of Medicine and of psychology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Giddon is a 1959 DMD graduate from HSDM with postdoctoral training in periodontology and oral medicine, PD’62. He received a PhD in psychology from Brandeis University, following an AB from Brown University and an MA in psychology from Boston University. He is the author of more than 150 published articles, abstracts, reviews, and books (behavioral science and dental practice ) on the psychophysiology of stress and disease, pain and facial deformity, and the anthropometric bases of perceived facial and body appearance, while continuing to serve as a consultant to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Pain Center.
