Important New Research on Osteoporosis
HSDM Dean for Research and Hersey Professor of Cell Biology Bjorn R. Olsen, MD, PhD, and colleagues recently published research that was featured on the cover of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. This important research concerns a novel mechanism by which intracellular vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) prevents osteoporosis. Since it is known that the levels of VEGF in organs (and cells) decrease with age in both humans and mice, it is likely that this is one of the mechanisms of age-dependent bone loss and increased bone marrow fat. This exciting research was featured in various media, including MedLexicon and Harvard Medical School news.
