HSDM Team Receives AAPHD Foundation Grant

An HSDM team comprised of principal investigator Lisa Simon (DMD 2014) and coinvestigators Dr. Romesh Nalliah, Chiara Rivas-Morello (DMD 2014), and Katherine Schiavoni (HMS/HKS 2015) was recently selected to receive a $5,000 grant from the American Association of Public Health Dentistry Foundation (AAPHD). Funds from the grant, entitled, “Improving Oral Health for Vulnerable Massachusetts Populations by Joining Forces with Our Medical Allies,” will be used to continue the team’s efforts to integrate oral health into primary care at the MGH-Chelsea Health Center.

The team’s innovative activities fit perfectly with the AAPHD Foundation’s guiding principles to support interventions designed to improve access to oral health initiatives, build and strengthen the dental public health workforce, translate science into practice, and maintain competency in dental public health. Specifically, the team will provide an interprofessional seminar series for medical students volunteering at the Crimson Care Collaborative, a student-run clinic at the health center, as well as oral health education and screenings for clinic patients by dental students. These interventions will benefit the Chelsea community, for whom access to dental care is a challenge, while improving the oral health knowledge of their medical allies.
