Continuing Education in Shanghai

Drs. T. Howard Howell and David M. Kim from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) Division of Periodontology recently led a team of Harvard faculty to Shanghai, China to host HSDM’s first continuing education course at the Harvard Center Shanghai on October 19-21, 2015.

The course, “A Comprehensive Guide to Advanced Implant Dentistry” drew participants from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and Macau. Dentists in attendance participated in a collaborative learning environment to discuss standards of comprehensive treatment planning and the clinical decisions that go into saving a tooth or replacing it with a dental implant. They also had the opportunity to perform regenerative and surgical procedures on simulator models.

In addition to hosting the successful continuing education course, Drs. Howell and Kim met with representatives from the College of Stomatology, Tongji University and with Chinese leaders in online dental education. They also met with local dental leaders to discuss the status of dentistry in China and the potential for future collaboration in continuing education in dentistry.

The Harvard Center Shanghai opened in March 2010. President Drew Faust has said the Center plays a vital role "as a hub for seminars and executive training,” and increases the opportunity for “collaboration between Harvard faculty and Chinese universities, organizations, and government.” Drs. Howell and Kim plan a series of courses at the Harvard Center to expand educational programs in China. They will host the next course there in May 2016.
