Almuni Day 2014
On Friday, May 30, HSDM and Harvard Medical School hosted Reunion and Alumni Day 2014. Members of classes ending in 4 and 9 were invited to joint HMS/HSDM Reunion events, and all HSDM alumni (as well as faculty and staff) were encouraged to attend Alumni Day activities at HSDM. The day featured the annual Harvard Dental Alumni Association Business Meeting, at which the HSDM Distinguished Alumni Awards were presented to Charles F. Shuler, DMD79, and Samuel F. Lynch, DMSc89, PD89 (Lynch was unable to attend). Also presented were the treasurer's report and the necrology report. The meeting ended with outgoing Association president Patricia Slinin, DMD96, PD96, passing the gavel to incoming president Ladan Basiripour, DMD93, who will serve for the next two years.
Following the HDAA business meeting, the Alumni Symposium, "Stories from Beyond the Mouth," featured presentations from three very different HSDM researchers. First, Elsbeth Kalenderian, DDS, MPH, PhD, chair and associate professor of oral health policy and epidemiology, presented her research on the need for standardized dental diagnostic codes across dental practices. Next, Vicki Rosen, PhD, a basic science researcher, spoke on "Joint Development as a Roadmap for New Osteoarthritis Therapies." Martin Nweeia, DMD, DDS, an instructor at HSDM, then presented his research on "Discovering the Functional Significance for the Extraordinary Narwhal Tusk."
Finally, Dean Bruce Donoff presented the annual State of the School address, and Alumni Day ended with a showing of the HSDM campaign video, "It Begins with You." Several members of the Class of 2004 then joined together for a tour of HSDM, during which memories of lockers, treatment bays, and special people, among others, came flooding back.
