Dr. Walter Guralnick graduated from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1941. He completed his oral surgery residency at Boston City Hospital, after which he spent four years in the military service, two of them overseas with the 7th General Hospital. Dr. Guralnick began the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) in Boston in 1946, joined the Harvard Dental School faculty in 1950, and became a member of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) staff that same year. In 1966 he was appointed chief of the Oral and Maxillofacial Service at MGH and professor of OMS at the School as well as chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Also in 1966, he was a founding member of what is now Delta Dental of Massachusetts and served as its president for 10 years. In addition, he was a member of the board of Blue Cross of Massachusetts.

In 1996 Dr. Guralnick was elected to the Royal College of Surgeons in England, and in the same year, he was also elected into membership of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. An endowed chair, the Walter Guralnick Professorship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, was established at Harvard in 1993.

Since 1979 Dr. Guralnick has taught in China and was awarded honorary professorships at the medical schools in Shanghai, Chengdu, and Xian. Dr. Guralnick has received numerous other honors, among them the Donald B. Osbon and the William J. Gies Foundation awards. In 2005, he was honored with the Harvard Medal at the University Commencement exercises, and in 2009 he received the Arnold K. Maislen Award at New York University and the Gavel Prize of the Forsyth Institute.

In 1981, the Harvard Faculty of Medicine granted approval of “the combined degree” training program of OMS residents, of which Dr. Guralnick was the principal architect. This educational pathway is currently followed by a significant number of the specialty’s training programs. Dr. Guralnick is particularly pleased to have had a significant influence upon the education of oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
