Agnes Berendsen, PhD

Dr. Agnes Berendsen received a MSc degree in Medical Biology from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands followed by a Ph.D. degree from the VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2008. Her PhD thesis was entitled ‘A Tissue Engineering Approach to the Regeneration of Periodontal Tissues’ and the work was done at the Department of Oral Cell Biology of the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In 2008 she started a postdoc in Dr. Marian Young’s lab (Molecular Biology of Bones and Teeth Section) of the Craniofacial and Skeletal Diseases Branch of the NIDCR/NIH in Bethesda, MD. After three exciting years at the NIH, in 2011 she joined the lab of Dr. Bjorn Olsen in the Department of Developmental Biology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Fields of Interest

Dr. Berendsen’s research focusses on understanding the mechanisms by which VEGF regulates the differentiation of osteoblast precursor cells during bone development, maintenance and aging.
